The area was subdivided in 1957 by landowners Pinckney R.Cox and Harley Kern to capitalize on the post-WWII expansion of nearby Fort Hood.Following a successful petition for a municipal water system, it was incorporated in 1960 and named "Harker Heights" in honor of Harley Kern.
